Benefits of Cedar Siding
WoodPlank is your trusted choice for cedar siding online, shipped anywhere in the US. It’s not hard to see what makes cedar so popular.
Naturally Resists Rot and Decay
Cedar siding is incredibly durable thanks to the natural oils locked inside the wood. These compounds repel moisture, resist fungal growth, and deter insects - so you get protection without chemical preservatives or pressure treatment.
Stunning, Warm Aesthetic
Western red cedar has a reddish-brown heartwood with visible grain lines that vary board to board. The color ages to a silver-gray patina over time if left unfinished, which a lot of homeowners prefer. Or, you can finish it with a UV-protectant oil if you want it to hold that original warm tone for years to come. Either way, a cedar facade has an unmistakable depth that painted or engineered surfaces don’t come close to.
Sustainable Building Material
Cedar is a renewable resource that regenerates well in managed forests. It lasts a long time outdoors, too, which means less frequent replacement compared to untreated softwoods. It doesn’t need any chemical treatment, either.

Frequently asked questions
Is cedar good for exterior siding?
Yes. Its natural oil content makes it resistant to moisture, rot, and insect damage. It's been the go-to siding species in North America for generations for this reason alone. But it also looks absolutely beautiful on the outside of a house. However, it’s quite expensive - and a lot of homeowners and contractors are deciding to go with composite siding. Less maintenance, lower cost, same stunning appearance and long lifespan.
Is cedar siding expensive?
It costs more than pine or composite at the same coverage. That’s why a lot of our customers prefer thermally modified siding instead. Our Western Red Cedar Cladding is a clear vertical grain option, which comes at a premium price point of $374.99 per 15 square feet, compared to $179.99 for Thermo Clear Pine at the same coverage. But that goes back to grade of cedar we offer - CVG (clear vertical grain). It’s the most expensive compared to knotty or STK.
How long does cedar siding typically last?
20-40 years with periodic maintenance (UV oil every few years and regular cleaning). You can still expect decades of life if left completely unfinished - the surface just weathers to gray. Climate, sun exposure, and installation quality all affect longevity.
Or, you can go with composite siding instead which is maintenance-free. It’s quickly become one of our best-selling alternatives to real wood siding.
Does cedar siding need to be sealed?
Not for structural protection. Cedar's natural oils handle moisture and decay resistance on their own. But some homeowners choose to apply a UV-protectant oil or stain after installation to preserve the original reddish-brown color. It will need to be recoated every 2-3 years (depending on sun exposure). That’s a lot of work, so ask yourself if you want to commit to that or if you’d prefer to go with something maintenance-free like composite.
